Jacare Still Climbing But Denies UFC Signing

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, who is the featured attraction for the first Amazon Challenge, has shown once again that the current fight scene in Brazil is no longer the proper market for his skills.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist found himself looking for his sixth win in seven bouts when he faced veteran brawler Jose Ribamar. The experienced Ribamar was well aware that a victory over the likes of Souza would likely catapult him into the international spotlight, but could not overcome a poor fight plan in which he chose to engage the grappling specialist in close quarters.

Souza took advantage of this tactical error, taking Ribamar to the ground and pummeling him with violent strkes. Souza was relentless in his attack of Ribamar, throwing vicious punches until Ribamar could no longer maintain his guard. Then, at 3:28 into the first round, Souza applied an armbar that would end the fight.

Souza, who appears more than ready to compete on the international stage, has denied recent reports that have him signed to the UFC.

Souza has stated, “I have not signed with Zuffa, unlike what people have said on the Internet,” following the fight.

Another favorite in the Amazon Challenge, Daniel Trindade, of Associacao Trindade, lived up to expectations in the 176-pound tournament division. Although he is experienced with 24 bouts in his career thus far, Trindade remains a lesser known name in the MMA scene.

In the first round, Trindade made short work of his opponent, earning a stoppage due to strikes at 1:43.

In the finals he faced Yuri Fraga, who choked out Claudio Supa in the previous fight to earn a spot in the final.

Fraga appeared capable of handling Trindade in the finals, however, Trindade had different plans. Using his heavy blows and powerful striking ability, Trindade dropped Fraga 58 seconds into round three, earning knockout victory. In comments made following his victory, Trindade stated that he was more than ready to defend his title at the next Amazon Challenge event.

In the 155 pound division, Diego Ceara - a current Souza teammate - controlled the pace of his fight against Juarez ending the bout with a knockout at 1:27 in the opening round. Ceara then dispatched Trindade’s protege, Fabiano Jacarezinho, in the semifinals. He is set to face Jorge Clay this month for the belt.

The second Amazon Challenge will take place on October 27 and will showcase the finals of the 155-pound tournament and will boast a possible match-up in the 176-pound division between current champ Daniel Trindade defending his title against Adriano Martins, of Jungle FC.

More news on this closer to the date,

Matt Hughes Set To Retire

The most dominant Welterweight Champion in UFC history dropped a bombshell on the MMA world recently when he announced plans to retire after fighting no more than “two or three” more bouts in the UFC.

The comments came in the form of a ‘teaser’ clip for episode number three of the latest installment of the popular Spike TV reality show, “The Ultimate Fighter.” The second episode containing the clip aired on September 27 on Spike TV.

Hughes, who is scheduled to face current champ Matt Serra in a title bout at UFC 79 on December 29, spilled the beans while conversing with members of his Team Hughes on the show. It has been noted, however, that this episode of the show was filmed during June and may not necessarily reflect the former champ’s current outlook.

Hughes has recently started his own fight team alongside coaches Robbie Lawler, Matt Pena and Marc Fiore. The team plans to train at a newly constructed gym located in Granite city, Ill. The training center has been named the H.I.T Squad, for Hughes Intensive Training. The training center is scheduled to open to the public sometime this January.

Marc Fiore has recently stated that Hughes plans to run the school following his retirement.

Hughes has defended the welterweight title seven times during his career. He lost his belt to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 65 which took place last November and will turn 34 years old this month.

UFC 77 Hostile Territory Oct 20th

UFC 77 will take place on Oct. 20. Nicknamed “Hostile Territory,” the event will feature the much anticipated rematch of Anderson Silva and Rich Franklin for the UFC Middleweight Championship. Franklin, the extremely popular former UFC Champ, will attempt to reclaim his title from the fighter who took it from him. Since winning the Championship, Anderson Silva has come to be recognized as one of the most dangerous strikers on the MMA scene. After his destruction of Franklin last year, Silva has strung together a number of impressive victories to solidify his UFC career. Despite this, early betting lines have Franklin as the slightest of favorites.

UFC 77 also features an intriguing under-card battle in the heavyweight division between Brandon Vera and Tim Sylvia. Many are looking to the winner of this fight to challenge for the Heavyweight crown, currently held by Randy Coture. Odds makers have currently posted Brandon Vera as an early 2-1 favorite to triumph over Tim Sylvia. This may not be bad news for Sylvia, as he has found himself an underdog many times throughout his career and has defied the odds on a consistent basis. Expect this to be a very intense and entertaining match-up with a likely title-shot at stake.

Another exciting match-up sets the always dangerous Jason Macdonald against the ground and pound specialist Yushin Okami. Macdonald is back on track after having a six fight win-streak ended by none other than Rich Franklin. In his most recent bout, Macdonald submitted Rory Singer 3:18 into the 2nd round. Yushin Okami, is in a similar position, looking to bounce back after having his own streak of six straight victories derailed once again by Rich Franklin. In that bout Okami went the distance but lost a unanimous decision to the former champ. This one is anybody’s guess and is guaranteed to get a lot of attention.

Other fights rounding out the card include Eric Schafer vs. fellow American Stephan Bonnar, Brazilian Jorge Gurgel against the United States’ Alvin Robinson, Josh Burkman vs. Forrest Petz, and finally Canadian Kalib Starnes vs. Alan Belcher of the United States.

Nogueira vs. Kongo Set For UFC 79

The UFC Fight Network has reported Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will be hitting it off with Cheick Kongo in UFC 79 that is to be held in December.

The rumer has it that the winner of the fight will be Randy Couture’s next opponent for the UFC Heavyweight Title!
